HOW TO SELL
WITHOUT OVERSELLING

Six rules that protect your credibility, keep advertisers renewing, and make NexLvl Charlotte a platform people trust — not a billboard they scroll past.

The Six Rules

01

Cap Your Inventory Hard

The Problem

If you sell every slot to every advertiser who asks, the grid looks like a billboard farm — readers stop trusting it and stop clicking.

The Rule

Max 8 paid listings in the Things To Do grid at any time. Never more.

How To Do It

  • 3 slots per major category max (Eat & Drink, Outdoor, Culture, etc.)
  • Mark your internal tracker when a slot is genuinely full — not "almost full"
  • If a new advertiser wants in, put them on a waitlist with a real timeline
  • Rotate out stale ads every 90 days to keep the grid fresh
02

Never Promise Traffic Numbers You Don't Have Yet

The Problem

Quoting "thousands of views" before you've built the audience sets you up for refund requests, disputes, and reputation damage.

The Rule

Only quote what you can prove. Use screenshots and real analytics — nothing invented.

How To Do It

  • Say: "Here's our current monthly traffic" — show the actual number
  • Say: "As the site grows, your placement gets more valuable" — true and honest
  • Never say: "We get X visitors a month" unless you have a screenshot to back it up
  • Set a performance review at 30 days — talk results before renewal pressure
03

Sell Results, Not Real Estate

The Problem

Advertisers who feel like they just bought a box on a page won't renew. Advertisers who feel like partners will.

The Rule

Frame every package as an outcome, not a placement.

How To Do It

  • "Your business will be seen by people actively researching where to eat/explore in Charlotte"
  • Send a monthly screenshot showing the card is live and looking great
  • Mention when you've driven notable traffic to their listing
  • Offer to update their photo or copy once per quarter for free
04

Stagger Your Start Dates

The Problem

Onboarding 5 advertisers in the same week means 5 renewals due the same week — cash flow chaos and a crowded grid overnight.

The Rule

Sign one new advertiser per 2-week window. No exceptions during launch phase.

How To Do It

  • Tell prospects: "The next available slot opens [date]" — creates scarcity that's actually true
  • Use the 2-week buffer to get their card looking perfect before going live
  • Stagger billing so renewals don't all pile up on the same date
  • This also gives you time to check if their business is still operating before renewal
05

Know When To Say No

The Problem

Not every business is a good fit. A bad advertiser hurts your credibility with readers more than the revenue is worth.

The Rule

Only list businesses you'd actually recommend to someone moving to Charlotte.

How To Do It

  • Check Google reviews before signing — under 3.8 stars is a red flag
  • No multi-level marketing, "investment" businesses, or anything requiring a disclaimer
  • If a business closes or moves, pull the listing same day
  • You have the right to decline or refund any advertiser who doesn't fit the brand
06

Underpromise. Overdeliver. Always.

The Problem

The fastest way to lose an advertiser is to hit them with a great pitch, then go silent after they pay.

The Rule

Your communication schedule IS the product. Automate it.

How To Do It

  • Send a "You're live!" email with a screenshot the day their card goes up
  • 30-day check-in: "Here's how your listing performed this month"
  • 60-day check-in: "Would you like to update your photo or copy?"
  • Never let a renewal date pass without reaching out 2 weeks early

Remember

THE PLATFORM IS THE PRODUCT.
PROTECT IT FIRST.

Every advertiser you turn down to protect the reader experience is an investment in the long-term value of the ones you keep.
