Welcome to the very first Queen City Rundown for local business owners. Every week we share what's happening in Charlotte, one neighborhood worth knowing, and a simple idea to help your business be found. Short in your inbox, a little deeper here.
The big story: 135 new neighbors a day
The Charlotte region added 49,324 residents between July 2024 and July 2025. That's about 135 new people every single day, not counting births, according to the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance.
A few more numbers from the same year:
- 17,000 net new jobs across the region.
- 28,366 new housing units, even as the region's affordable housing shortage tops 40,000 units.
- 18,966 people moved here from other countries, about a third fewer than the year before, mirroring a national drop.
- Charlotte itself topped the Census list for the most people added of any U.S. city.
Growth did slow a little. The year before, the region was adding about 157 people a day. But 135 a day is still a small town's worth of new neighbors every few months.
What it means for local businesses
New residents don't have habits yet. They haven't picked their coffee shop, their Friday-night patio, their barber, their nail salon or their Sunday brunch place. They're choosing right now, mostly by asking around, scrolling, and trying what people they trust recommend.
That's good news for independent businesses. A newcomer has no loyalty to a chain. If they hear about you early, from a neighbor, a friend or someone they follow, you have a real shot at becoming their spot for years.
Three easy ways to be found this week
1. Freshen your Google Business Profile. For many newcomers, this is the very first thing they see. Make sure your hours are current (including holiday hours coming up), add a few new photos, and keep your menu or service list up to date. It takes about 15 minutes.
2. Thank every reviewer. A short, warm reply to each review, good or not so good, shows new customers there's a real person behind the counter. It also tells future reviewers that you're listening.
3. Let locals tell your story. People try the places that people they follow recommend. A friend's post or a local creator's Reel often reaches newcomers better than an ad, because it comes from someone they already trust.
Neighborhood spotlight: South End
South End is our first launch neighborhood. Over the coming weeks we'll be celebrating the independent restaurants, shops, studios and service businesses that give it its personality.
If you're new to the area, start with our neighborhood guides to get your bearings.

On the calendar
Our things to do in Charlotte this weekend board is refreshed every week with checked dates and links, and the Charlotte events calendar covers the rest of the city. Busy weekends in your neighborhood are a great time to post your hours and specials.
From the creator side
What makes a creator visit go great? Three small things:
- A warm welcome at the door. A friendly hello shows up on camera.
- One dish or service you're proudest of. Lead with your best, not your whole menu.
- A spot near the window. Natural light makes everything look as good as it tastes.
